I really took to 5 Shots the first Jay Nova collection so I couldn't wait to snatch up a copy of Blind Corners. The story telling is tight, the playful exchanges between Jay and her partner Randy remain highlights for me. I also liked seeing Randy strike out on his own somewhat in a tale called "Down The Line". From the first book I got the sense he was cunning and smart in his own right not just Jay's attack dog or John Watson to her Sherlock Holmes. "Down The Line" showed that.

Jay, the undeniable star of the series, is portrayed as a tough customer but a story like "Pressure Points" shows how her ability to think on her feet is as important to keeping her alive as her gun is. The four stories are smooth reads that are involving and fun in a hard edged sort of way. I had a good time watching my favorite braided sleuth in action and can't wait to see what comes next.

Blind Corners by Jemir Johnson is a graphic novel in the best sense of the term, employing minimalist writing techniques in presenting the short story in comic-book format. Jemir's team of Luis Sierra and Winston Blakely compare favorably to their peers in the industry, providing quality artwork in bringing an extra dimension to four exciting narratives that both teenage readers and mature audiences will be able to enjoy.

In "Street Sweeper", the Light Star Investigations team of Jocasta "Jay" Nova and Randy Michaels are hired by underworld entrepreneur Sermon to locate his estranged daughter Nia. It is here where we learn that Jay has telepathic ability which proves to be a unique, invaluable and indispensable tool of the trade for the team. They engage in battle with hostile forces who turn out to be the allies of Nia's brother Ray. His goal is to protect and defend Serena, his niece and the granddaughter of Sermon himself. In "Cross Pattern", the internecine conflicts continue with a new client, underworld czar Cavario Dominguez. He is at war with an El Salvadoran gang who, along with their ally the Puppetmaster, are targets of a Federal investigation. Jay and Randy join forces with agent Guillermo Sandoval in rescuing Octavio, a kidnapped boy being used as a bargaining chip by the evildoers. "Down the Line" features Tamia, a former member of a trio of street hustlers who marries a record producer and finds her fortune. She enters into a smuggling racket with one of the label's tour managers, and it is up to Jay and Randy to rescue her from an assassination attempt when the deal goes sour. In "Pressure Point", a mid-management Mob leader hires the team to recover a videotape in which he was filmed in a sexual encounter with a top-ranking boss' gay son.

Jemir Johnson’s action-packed, sexy and sleek graphic novel, ‘Blind Corners’ is something I’ve been waiting to see for ages a no-holds-barred female lead who will not suffer any BS and shoots her way into and out of hairy situations. And if your jaws do not drop in the first few pages, I don’t know what will.

‘Blind Corners’ is about Jay Nova, a private detective that’s more a ‘fixer of desperately broken things’ than your vanilla garden variety investigator. The graphic novel is a collection of intense short pieces that make up a compelling whole and will give you that quick fix. The illustrations are worth commending—they give you a gritty sense of those old “blacksploitation” movies of the 1970s, but with modern twists and subtle touches that only enhance the overall feel of the novel.

And then there’s another intriguing aspect to Nova’s character she can read minds. While this may be a tremendous advantage to any detective, Nova’s ability is like an Achilles heel—she could not control it and whenever it does happen, it leaves blinding pain in its wake. This little addition makes only the story much more interesting, and it lends an emotional gravitas to an otherwise exceedingly hardboiled urban crime fiction.

Overall, ‘Blind Corners’ is an insanely addictive graphic novel—if you love strong heroines, then you’d love to sink your mind-teeth in Johnson’s work. I can envision Jay Nova on the big screen, played by some of Hollywood’s current A-listers, larger than life—Nova’s sensual, yet no-nonsense style is perfect for the movies. I can only hope somebody from Hollywood options this so we can all enjoy Nova’s adventures on the big screen, in high definition, in 3D. Five stars for this one.

4 very interesting stories about Private Investigator (& secret telepath) Jay Nova. Read as she faces corrupt businessmen, drug cartels, hustlers, and kidnappers. This is a character that I could easily see being transferred to the big (or small) screen someday.
