A Midsummer Tights Dream The Misadventures of Tallulah Casey 9780007430604 Books
I have to say, I love British humor and have done since back in the days when Monty Python was being aired on PBS. So, this book felt like coming home.I love Tallulah! She is such a great character. She is confused about her sticky outy parts and doesn't know what to do about any of it or who to talk to about it. Sure, she has some mates from Dither Hall, I mean Dother Hall, but none of them are exactly experts.
For instance, she claims she has Tourette's of the legs as she is prone to break out into spontaneous Irish dancing. She is obsessed with the length of her legs and the fact that she has nobby knees, hoping to one day grow into her knees. She is waiting for normal body parts to grow and keeps measuring her chest to see if her bust size has increased.
She is at a performing arts school, but by her confession, cannot sing, dance or act, but she so desperately wants to climb the ladder of Showbiz and wear the golden slippers of applause.
Then there are the boys in her life. There is Ben, who kissed her in Book 1 who she refers to as Bat Boy. When he kissed her, she said it was like a bat flying about in her mouth. There is Charlie, who kissed her in Book 1, but then told her he had a girlfriend. There is Alex, the brother of her mate, Ruby, whose father owns the Blind Pig Pub. Alex is her dream guy who she refers to as Alex the Good, but he is also away at college. so she doesn't really get to see him. And then there's Cain, the resident bad boy who seems to be a player and always seems to have a way of showing up at the worst of times when Tallulah is acting less than normal.
She is confused about her body, confused about boys and what they want as well as how to interact with them on a romantic level. It is amusing to follow along as she and her Tree Sister friends stumble their way through adolescence, love and relationships with a bit of Irish dancing thrown in the mix.
Her sole source of wisdom and expertise is her cousin Georgia and Georgia's mates and if any of you have read the Confessions of Georgia Nicholson series, only hilarity can ensue.
If you're looking for a lighthearted laugh, I would highly recommend these books. Book 1 in the series is Withering Tights and they are well worth the time to read. They'll have you "laughing like a loon on loon tablets"!
Warning: Contents include snogging and lots of talk about snogging. I wouldn't recommend for the very young.

A Midsummer Tights Dream The Misadventures of Tallulah Casey 9780007430604 Books Reviews
not as good as the Georgia books.
This book doesn't have the magic that Withering Tights did, but I love this little village with its squirrel furniture and falling down arts school. But I can't stop here, I need to watch the owlets, and Loolah grow up.
I was addicted to the Georgia Nicholson books during high school, and was devastated when Rennison ended the series. I was a little skeptical that I could fall in love with another "kinda like Georgia" character, but Tallulah is just as amazing and awkward as Georgia was! She is a character that the reader can relate to, and reminiscent of that age. Rennison's humor is once again shinning and like with the Georgia series this is not one that I recommend reading in public!
While this series is not quite as good as the Georgia Nicholson books, they are still funny. And that is what Ms. Rennison does -- bring us laughs.
For everyone who enjoyed the exploits of Georgia Nicholson, take a leap of faith with Rennison's new series -- you will not be disappointed. Tallulah Casey is a quirky, original heroine with a bit more common sense than her flighty cousin, wrapped up with some of the same insecurities that plague young teens the world over. You'll love her, and cheer for her, and ultimately be very glad you tried it.
Louise Rennison is by far one of the most talented YA writers out there. She is capable of keeping me interested in her characters (over a decade!) and I never get tired of anything she has to say. I just love how comic she is! And she just seems like one of the authors I wish I could know and be friends with because she seems like she'd be so cool!
Any way, the book takes place not too long after book one finishes. Tallulah is back at Dother Hall, the school she spent her summer being an artist in. She somehow got into the school program, and is back to hanging around trees with her best friends. Her owlets have started to grow up. She's also back to having the same crushes.
And while a large part of this book is pure comedy, there's a lot of classic coming of age moments as well. She learns really quick what it's like to fall for someone who's in love with someone else. She learns that she's really good at pretending that she doesn't care what people think of her. And as the title suggests, the first school term focuses on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Talllulah is asked to play Bottom because the higher-ups in school who see Tallulah as "trouble" know that she's okay making a fool of herself in public. She actually goes on stage in furry tights and Mickey Mouse ears to do an Irish donkey dance...And the audience loved every second of it.
Dother Hall is having some financial problems. And there are notes all over the building asking students not do things (like shower) too often. And between all the fairy dances and play preparations, there are a lot of financial worries. One of Tallulah's friends actually leaves school because someone in Hollywood hires her! There's a lot to learn about snogging, licking, boyfriends, journaling, and friendship. And I kind of like that Tallulah doesn't have a boyfriend yet. She doesn't have to have one (though she'd like to).
I read this book in one sitting. It read so fast because of its journal-type format. And there's the trademark glossary of British and made up terms in the back. I really can't even begin to explain the humor that I love so much though without a few quotes I took note of.
I just had to share these
This takes place right when Tallulah comes back to school. She stays with family who lives in the village where her school is.
"So here I am back in my old squirrel room. Sitting on my wooden bed with the squirrel carved into the bedhead. With my feather potato. I've brought back my squirrel slippers, the ones that Dibdobs gave me when I first came. She said they were to make me feel at home. Which they would have done, had my home been in an oak tree" (16).
And this takes place in the same family home not much past this first quote. Note Harold really likes to knit...
"I had a crumpet and some honey and milky coffee. The honey is local of course. Harold is obsessed with local produce. I bet he knows the bees by name. And has made them little winter cloaks like his. And is paying their tuition fees to Bee Academy. So they can better themselves and get out of the worker-bee trap" (34).
And then this quote just sounds better out of context
"I nearly said, "I am not an ice cream! I am a human being!"' (39).
This book gets a 10/10 from me. And I seriously had to cut myself short with just three shared quotes. I could have listed all 20+ quotes I noted in my book. Those were just my beginning favorite quotes. I have a lot of post-its in this book...It's just so good. If you want a book that will make you laugh out loud, please go pick this up!
I love this author and have since I first read her in middle school. I was frustrated that I could never find the paperbacks in America, but it turns out the British covers are way cuter anyway.
